Editor of Oxford's new giant Chinese English dictionary

Interesting. I'd like to know more about the electronic version of this.

I've had Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary: English-Chinese, Chinese-English for a few years. So, please someone explicate the novelty. And is this woman fluent in both French (she worked for Larousse) and Chinese?

I received the dictionary from Amazon yesterday. Already use the Oxford Starter, Mini (pocket), and Concise (red cover) dictionaries. This carries several themes forward.

Has much more emphasis on translating phrases, showing things in context. You can see this approach in the Concise version. The new one has more such contextual use, and is much, much clearer to read too.

I spent a few hours last night just paging through it, going "wow". Still haven't absorbed it. Both lexically and in design, I'm impressed.

A rumour that has been circulating, recently, due in no small part to an article published in the Sunday Times, and one that I am happy to be able to knock on the head with the following hyperlink: link

Words and phrases now commonly used on the Internet and in the media have been included in the new edition. Examples are: 酷逼 山寨 猛料 愤青 盛女 播云 猪流感. The new dictionary will make it to the stores on September 9, 2010, in Hong Kong.

Where can the dictionary be bought in China? That or conveniently on the internet in China?

A search on taobao and dangdang hasn't turned up any results; I do not exactly want to pay the heavy fees to get it from amazon.

As to where you can buy the dictionary in Beijing, at the moment you can find it at big bookshops like Xinhua or the Foreign Languages Bookstore. I think that the Bookworm should be getting some in shortly too.

The elephant in the room in these self-congratulatory discussions with the OUP, online and otherwise, is the disgraceful omission of all phonetic reference , i.e. pinyn, from the English-Chinese section. This at one stroke renders the dictionary almost useless to Anglophone (and e.g. Cantonese) Mandarin/PTH learners at all levels. With such a long roll-call of editors and advisors, it beats me how the project went ahead with what is so obviously a cost-cutting marketing stitch-up to angle the work to Chinese-English learners only. I shall advise Anglophone students not to invest in this deeply-flawed work. It is indeed a 'unique' __in being the only dictionary of the many I know that neglects phonetics like this. By the way, I know what I'm speaking of __ as well as being almost a lifelong learner, (no one really ceases to be) I've written advanced Chinese teaching material and, as I'm almost ashamed to admit, also on lexicography for OUP under another heading.
