Thanks for this interview, very interesting.
I'm quite ill-informed on Chinese history and culture (past and current), but I found the statements of this film-maker very interesting.
It surprised me to see someone, a young and critical artist/intellectual, who would seem at first to be liberal-leaning, imply that people were better off (at least 'existentially') when the Maoist personality cult was still functioning in society. One would think that an artist like this would be more supportive of the general cultural/economic liberalization of the 80's...
