this guy's pieces are unbearably mundane. where's the verve? what's the hook? the fact that he's an American(?) who speaks Mandarin and lives in Shanghai just doesn't have the same "thrill" in 2008 that in might have had in, say, 1998.

and tell him to get over "arts" in China. the visual arts have always been a useful escape hatch for domestic investors seeking to escape China's stringent capital controls. and the visual arts were a decent speculative investment for foreigners in past 1/2 decade. but now--i regret to inform you--the party's over.

it's the year of the rat. be shrewd.

While according to b., it's true that the growing creative industry in China is not recent news, it was still helpful for me to get an introduction to this new venue. I'll be sure to check it out while in Shanghai; I might not have known about it if I hadn't seen it here, being that I'm based in another city.

I know this was not the point of the episode but what I would have wanted to see more was information on the exhibit of 'green' design. This is something I feel young creative types in China need to embrace as a concept, given the environment issues their country will be facing in the future. It was reassuring that this exhibition caught the eye of a local interviewee as well...

Nice video. These clips are source of information not readily available. It would have been nice to see historical photographs of the slaughterhouse back in day as a comparison.

Superb. Whether or not the event itself was interesting or a success, this SB taps into the creative energy in Shanghai and provides a window into the numerous grassroots creative projects that are happening in China which are often overlooked by a media, both foreign and domestic, that focuses on covering the art market rather than the creative industries. Well done, guys.

Great, what Shanghai really needs is yet ANOTHER art space/creative space. Before long, these "houses of creativity" and "bastions against homogenization" will outnumber Starbucks! But that's really the state of arts and creativity in China. Once a novel and unique idea takes hold, it isn't long until hundreds of others join the bandwagon and very quickly sucks the lifeblood out of the idea. And now the latest victim is this fantastic bauhaus designed structure. I agree with one of the interviewees - that much of the mystery and mystique has disappeared for the sake of "creativity".

作为一个上海人可以看到自己城市里有如此精彩的地方真的很开心 改天自己也要去亲身体验下这“牛道” 很有意思
但是个人认为呢上海的创意产业真的是原始阶段中的初级阶段 东西不丰富有点乱 从好的方面想呢 上升空间是大的 但这毕竟是产业是艺术的产业不是股票 希望有更多的人来关注
