Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper. Today's paper was found at a newsstand in Beijing's central business district. The headline of The Beijing News today announces that a draft amendment on sustainability is now under review by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Under the proposed legislation, submitted to the top legislative body yesterday, the government will impose a graduated pricing system on utilities, such as electricity, gas, and tap water. In addition, the upper limit on fines for water pollution will be canceled. The current cap on fines is 1 million yuan (US$131,000).The Beijing News, like other Beijing papers, features a front page photo of Zhang Huimin, an eight-year-old running prodigy. Over the course of 55 days, she has run to Beijing from Haikou, Hainan Province, a distance of 3358 km. She's accompanied by her father, Zhang Jianmin, whose training methods have been widely criticized. (see relevant Independent article.) Other headlines mention that Beijing will deal severely with people who violate traffic regulations, affordable housing will become available to more citizens, and no one has come forward to claim a 5 million lottery jackpot. |
