During last night's live broadcast of the Italy - Australia football World Cup game, CCTV's announcer Huang Jianxiang (黄健翔) got rather excited, and took sides with the Italians, saying things like "Don't give the Australians any chances!" and after Italy won, "Long live Italy!"

Today Chinese blogs are castigating Huang, accusing him of gravely insulting Australia and being a disgrace to Chinese football fans. Beijing blogger Fly Show (心飞扬) has a post about it titled Huang 'Long Live Italy' Jianxiang, you can go home now. The post ends thusly: "Sorry Australia, please forgive our crazy man!" The post has a photoshop banner, which you can click here to see if the blog link doesn't work. The banner reads:

Huang was pulled from CCTV for six months in 2001 after bluntly criticizing then-coach Milutinovic during broadcast for his players' errors in a game against Qatar, and there's talk now that he'll be punished in a similar way.
Now here comes the strange part:
There is a piece of Chinese text circulating on the Internet that claims to be an Associated Press (AP) report, saying that more than 30 Australian football supporters surrounded the Australian Embassy in Beijing today, demanding that the Ambassador make a formal complaint to the Chinese government about Huang Jianxiang's commentary.
Are Chinese netizens making up their own foreign news reports?

UPDATE 2: According to a note circulating on the Chinese Internet, Huang Jianxiang has been punished by CCTV. The note purports to be from CCTV's Information Office. His punishment? He will be suspended from commenting on football games and wait to see how he behaves. However, this punishment does not start until AFTER the World Cup ends.

The Chinese commentary standard generally is abysmal....so many errors in names of players, facts and so on, plus an incredible lack of knowledge and expression...at least this guy was showing a bit of passion! My top two CCTV commentary bits:
Germany v Poland, 92 minutes, Germany snatch a late winner....we see the goal, get three replays, all the while the dude is screaming BALLACK! BALLACK!! INCREDIBLE!! BALLACK!! Problem was, Michael Ballack didn't get the goal, it was Oliver Neuville.....
Holland vs Portugal, 70 minutes
A dirty game, but very entertaining - alas the commentator was unimpressed by the play. After Deco hacks down a Dutch player, the commentator, in the most sneering way possible, says "Chinese fans want to see exciting play and excellent teamwork, not such violence'.....pah! U ever seen a taxi smash mate??? There is nothing that the Chinese love more than gawking at a couple of guys going at it bell and whistle!!!
I've been so amazed and impressed by how my Chinese co-workers have got into this World Cup, such interest and enthusiasm....I guess ignorance of decent coverage is bliss.
My fiancee and I were watching the broadcast this morning and it was definitely way over the top and didn't pay any respect to the good efforts of the Australian team. I would be able to understand if he was commentating on the Chinese team, but why does he have to favour one foreign team over another? I follwed up the related postings in tianya.cn nearly all day today and found the opinions of the netizens very polarized. My own analysis of Huang's evolvement is in the beginning of his career he followed the British commentators' style trying to show more restraint, but now he might have changed his mind to pursue the more enthusiastic Latin style instead;-) Only the simulation this time is ugly with wrong occasion.

Another possible explanation: on January 1st 2006 Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation. This gives Australia a better chance of qualifying for future world cups (without an automatic qualification spot, the top Oceania team needs to qualify by winning a play-off with a runner-up from another federation). Commentary in Australia of any sport is hardly what you could call unbaised, and rightly so, sport is about passion. Its not as though Huang changed the result or kicked the penalty.
Thing is we'd all understand if it was the Chinese team playing - sports reporters are pretty much expected to be pro their own country's team - but Italy? Either there's an ulterior motive or the man just got caught up in his commentary, which is at least a bit more exciting than the "hao qiu" "hao qiu" nonsense which seems to pass for commentary on CCTV.

Huang Jianxiang has apologised for his commentary. TV host Zhang Bin read out his apology last night. Looks like a face-saving exercise since there's no real explanation about what sent him crazy, besides a fondness for Italy.
I don't think that people would have been quite so upset if his reaction had been limited to hysteria after the goal was scored and the game was won. But he started calling Grosso a hero when he fell in the box - if he's not cheering the guy for taking a fall, then he's calling someone a hero merely for drawing a penalty. Either way, it's poor form.
I was most confuised when he started screaming 'happy birthday maldini!!!" maldini who is not even in the Italy squad that is.

1. Huang explained that he didn't like the Austrilian team, because most of the players do not even live in Austrilian, but live and play in Europe.
2. Is it true that a guy wearing Austrilian team uniform broke into the field carrying anti-China slogan, five minutes before the game started? Chinese TV cut that part, broadcasting file footage instead. So most Chinese audience missed that part.
3. Huang has been considered best commentator at CCTV by most soccer fans in China, in terms of professionalism and personality.
4. He's criticized by some Chinese audience for his commentary, just because these Chinese soccer fans think it is not fair for the Austrilian team.
The commentary was out of line, as was Huang's follow-up statement: "I dislike Australians indeed. I was hoping they'd do badly here."
A degree of bias and passion is expected within commentary, but taken to this extent it can become resentful and offensive.
No-one likes to hear their country criticised. Just look at all the people who have disappeared in China for this very reason.
Ultimately, China/ Australia relations may very well suffer over such a seemingly trivial incident. Indeed, one could say that they may "reap the fruits that Huang has sown."
The more likely scenario is that the Aussies will laugh it off.
P.S.- Sweety, regardless of your opinions on the Australian team, they were in the world cup, and China wasn't. This means that they are in fact a "real soccer team".
Eugene, 'Australian' (note the spelling) citizens are either born in Australia, or become citizens through legal process. The fact that they are in employ overseas is irrelevant. It is purely indicative of the better salaries and conditions that exist in European leagues.
